Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the loneliness, social isolation, and mental health problems of single-person households by using data from the Seoul single-person household survey data, and classify single-person households according to social and mental health problems. Among single-person households in Seoul, the proportions of those who experienced loneliness, social isolation, depression, and suicidal thoughts were 62.1%, 13.6%, 7.6%, and 0.7%, respectively. When classified according to their social and mental health problems, single-person households were divided into four types: the loneliness group, the isolation group, the loneliness and depression group, and the isolation and depression group. The loneliness group had a high proportion of the economically vulnerable and had an active demand for social relationship networks, whereas the isolated group had less demand for the social relationship network and a high desire to take care of themselves by such means as health care. The loneliness and depression group, comprising a high proportion of elderly people with poor economic and health status, showed high willingness to live in shared housing. The isolation and depression group tended to have higher income, high proportion of professional management and white color, and high proportion of women. They highly evaluated the necessity of mental health examination and counseling rather than forming a social network. This study is significant in that it is the first of its kind to measure and categorize the loneliness, social isolation, and mental health problems of single-person households. Future research on secluded single-person households who were not identified in this study is needed.
